What are the types of meditation?

Meditation is a proven alternative therapy that helps in dealing with various problems. Meditation is a very safe and simple way to balance your physical, emotional and mental states. It is simple to practice, but has multiple benefits.

The concept of using meditation for healing is not new. Meditative techniques came from diverse cultures and various peoples around the world. It has its roots in the traditions of world’s great religions. In fact people of all religious practice meditation in various forms. Meditation is being practiced to stop suffering and promote healing since thousands of years.

Types of meditation

There are various types of meditation. Prayer is probably the common way one practices meditation. The best-known types are transcendental meditation, Zen meditation, mindfulness meditation, Buddhist meditation and Taoist meditation.

The meditation encompasses diverse methods like:

  • Formal sitting – Your body will be held immobile and attention controlled.
  • Expressive practices – Your body will be let free.
  • Every time meditation – Go about your daily round of activities mindfully.

All these practices help in keeping your busy mind at peace. The intention of mediatation is not removing the stimulation but directing your concentration to one thing – one sound, one image, one word, or one’s breathe. Once your mind gets filled with calm and peace, it will be way from worry, stress or depression.

Basically there are two types of meditation:

  • Concentrative meditation
  • Mindfulness meditation

Concentrative meditation

In this type of meditation, you have to focus your attention on your breath, an image or a sound. This helps to still your mind and allows for a better awareness and clarity. This is nothing but narrowing your focus to a selected field. The simplest way for concentrative meditation is sitting quietly and focusing your attention on your breath. According to meditation practitioners there is a direct correlation between your breath and state of mind. For example, you can see that when a person is anxious or frightened his breath will be shallow and uneven. On the other hand, when his mind is calm his breath will be slow and regular. Focusing your mind continuously on inhalation and exhalation is a natural and simple form of meditation. As a result of this, your breathing becomes slower and deeper. And, your mind becomes tranquil and aware.

Mindfulness meditation

In this type of meditation, you have to open your attention to observe the sensations and feelings, thoughts, sounds and so forth. But you should not involve in thinking about them. You have to sit quietly and simply. Then witness what is going through your mind, and never react or become involved with the thoughts or images that come into it. It helps in gaining a more calm and non-reactive state of mind. Instead of narrowing your concentration to a selected field as you do in concentrative meditation, you will have complete awareness of the entire field.
